　Nagahisa Nakano, Visiting Professor, Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences, Osaka Prefecture University (Location: Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, President / President: Hiroshi Tsuji) and Euglena Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Izumo Mitsuru) suggests that continuous ingestion of microalgae Euglena (Japanese name: Euglena, hereafter Euglena) powder and paramilon * 1 powder, which is a unique ingredient, will alleviate gastric ulcer symptoms. We confirmed the results of the joint research and made a presentation at the 67th Annual Meeting of the Vitamin Society of Japan held on June 5. In addition, we filed a patent application on April 8 for the results of the announcement.

　Gastric ulcer is one of the modern diseases that causes pain and bleeding by forming erosion * 2 when the mucous membrane of the stomach is damaged by gastric acid. In this experiment, rats were given a normal diet, Euglena powder, a diet mixed with paramylon powder, and a diet mixed with amorphous paramylon * 3 powder, and then the rats were soaked in water to cause stress. We induced gastric ulcers and investigated the extent of gastric ulcer formation in each diet-fed rat. As a result, it was confirmed that the extent of gastric ulceration was suppressed in rats that ate a diet containing Euglena powder, paramylon powder, and amorphous paramylon powder, as compared to rats that ate a normal diet.
　Going forward, we will continue to Euglena and paramylon, which is a unique ingredient, with the aim of utilizing it in the medical field and increasing its added value as a food ingredient.
　The details of the research results are as follows.

* 1 Paramylon: A polysaccharide in which glucose molecules are linearly polymerized by β-1,3-bonds. * 2 Erosion: A condition in which the epithelium of the gastric mucosa is missing.
* 3 Amorphous paramylon: Paramylon is chemically treated to destroy its crystal structure (non-crystalline).

Suggestions for alleviating gastric ulcer symptoms by continuous intake of Euglena

■ Research content (confirmation research on the extent of gastric ulcer formation)
　Rats fed a normal diet, Euglena powder, a diet mixed with paramylon powder, and a diet mixed with amorphous paramylon powder for 2 weeks were allowed to breathe and soaked in water for 18 hours due to stress. Induced the formation of gastric ulcers. After that, when the stomach condition of each rat was confirmed, it was confirmed that the extent of gastric ulcer formation tended to be suppressed in rats fed a diet containing a mixture of Euglena

■ Consideration
　The results showed that ingestion of paramylon powder and amorphous paramylon powder may have an effect of alleviating gastric ulcer symptoms, and in particular Euglena powder may have a significant effect of alleviating gastric ulcer symptoms.
