■ Bangladesh's Current Situation for Reconstruction
Bangladesh, where violent clashes between protests and police have continued, is gradually moving toward the future with the formation of an interim government following the resignation of the former prime minister. In the capital city of Dhaka, large number of student volunteers are working together in an organized manner through: using social networking services: cleaning up destroyed areas; directing traffic at intersections in the absence of police; painting peeling road signs; patrolling neighborhoods, painting messages of peace and pictures of the country's future on walls around the city of Dhaka; and volunteering in various other activities.

Left: Students working on traffic control in place of absent police officers
Right: Students envisioning the future of the country under the elevated tracks of the Dhaka Metro, an urban rapid transit system whose stations have been partially destroyed.

■Background to collaboration with Grameen Danone
Euglena Co., Ltd. was established by its founder, President Izumo, who wanted to solve the nutritional problems he witnessed in Bangladesh when he was a student. In 2014, the company launched the “Euglena GENKI Program”  (https://euglena.jp/genki/),to distribute Euglena biscuits, which are rich in 59 nutrients, to children in Bangladesh. Together with Grameen Euglena, a cumulative total of 18.37 million Euglena biscuits have been distributed in the 10 years since its launch (as of June 30, 2024). Meanwhile, Grameen Danone is working to address nutrition and poverty issues in Bangladesh through the production and sale of yogurt. The three companies' desire to support the current situation in Bangladesh coincided and led to this collaboration.

As a first step, we have decided to distribute Euglena biscuits, a nutritional food, to student volunteers in Bangladesh and four of the public hospitals where people injured in the violence are receiving treatment. This activity has  started on Friday, August 9, 2024, with a maximum of 200,000 biscuits to be distributed.
We will continue to provide the necessary assistance according to the local needs. We hope that our prompt action will help widen the circle of support for Bangladesh's future.
