In addition, a 50% reduction in the amount of petroleum-derived plastics used in products during 2021
Euglena Co., Ltd.
Euglena Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Mitsuru Izumo, hereinafter "Euglena") has completely abolished existing PET bottle products for beverages with the aim of reducing the amount of petroleum-derived plastics used in its products. We have decided to allow customers to choose the presence or absence of plastic straws in their products. Euglena Future Summit members (“Summit Members”), who are in charge of efforts to change the future of the company and society. With this measure as the first step, we will take on the challenge of reducing the amount of petroleum-derived plastics used in our products by 50% by the end of 2021 * 1.
* 1: While the amount of plastic used per unit of sales in the fiscal year ended September 2018 was approximately 8 g / thousand yen, the amount of plastic used per unit of sales will be reduced by approximately 4 g / thousand yen (= 50% reduction) by 2021. ) Aim to
■ Roles and activities of CFO and Summit members
In order to change the future as a company, we believe that in addition to the current management team, future generations who will live in the future should participate in management discussions, and will exceed 500 in October 2019. The CFO was decided from the applications (https://www.euglena.jp/news/20191029-2/). Together with the Summit members, the CFO is Euglena 's management practices that do not undermine the needs of future generations so that they can contribute to the sustainable development of society.
Since taking office in October 2019, the CFO and Summit members have been investigating whether our business condition is in line with our management philosophy of "Health for people and the earth."
■ Decisions based on the policy formulated by the CFO
CFOPolicy formulated by
As a result of the survey, the CFO and Summit members have formulated a policy that "regardless of the level of environmental awareness, we aim to build a system that allows customers to take environmentally friendly actions without being aware of it." did.
Based on this policy, we focused on the environmentally friendly petroleum-derived plastics used in our healthcare products that are closest to our customers.
Our healthcare business sells food and cosmetics, and we use various materials for containers, packaging, transportation materials, etc. in both product groups. Among them, the amount of petroleum-derived plastics used is large, accounting for about 60% of product containers and packaging (the environmental load caused by the use and disposal of petroleum-derived plastics will be described later).
Decision details
Based on the above policy, we aim to reduce petroleum-derived plastics by (1) completely abolishing existing PET bottle products for beverages, and (2) allowing customers to select the presence or absence of plastic straws in some products. I decided. We will promptly implement these measures from September 2020 to reduce the amount of petroleum-derived plastics used in our products by approximately 4%. * 2.. In particular, existing PET bottle products account for more than 35% of our distribution beverage sales. * 3 We are planning to realize the policy formulated by the CFO to drastically switch the containers of the main products in the distribution field so that many customers can take environmentally friendly actions without being aware of it.
The details of each measure and the reduction rate of plastics are as follows.
* 2: While the amount of plastic used per unit of sales in the fiscal year ended September 2018 was approximately 8g / 1,000 yen, the existing PET bottle products for beverages were completely abolished, and some products were asked by customers to have plastic straws. It is expected that the amount of plastic used per unit of sales can be reduced by about 0.3g / thousand yen by making it selectable.
* 3: Estimated ratio based on sales for the fiscal year ending September 2019
(1) Complete abolition of existing PET bottle products for beverages
We will completely abolish the PET bottle products for beverages that are currently being developed and switch to paper container products that have a low environmental impact. Customers can reduce the amount of plastic used per bottle by about 94% by selecting a paper container, the Cart Can product (195g of existing products), instead of the PET bottle product (280g of existing products).
(2)Customers can select the presence or absence of plastic straws for some products
Customers can choose whether or not to use plastic straws for paper container products (cart cans) sold by their own EC. By selecting a cart can product without a plastic straw, it is possible to reduce the amount of plastic used per product by about 40%.
In addition to the above measures, we will completely review the use of petroleum-derived plastics in product containers in the healthcare business, aim to further reduce the amount of petroleum-derived plastics by reducing the weight of containers and reviewing the product lineup. We anticipate that the amount of petroleum-derived plastics we use in our products will be reduced by approximately 50% by the end of 2021 through the measures we are currently considering.
■ Background of the decision to reduce the use of plastic in products
The world's total annual plastic production is about 300 million tons (2014) * 4, of which 32% * 4 is said to pollute the geology and ocean without being treated as garbage. In particular, there are concerns about the impact on the ocean and other ecosystems, which could be a major negative legacy for future generations. In addition, the total amount of plastic waste in Japan is 9.03 million tons (2017) * 5, which means that about 70 kg of plastic is discarded annually per person.
Against this background, we believe that it is necessary for society as a whole to reduce the use of resources such as disposable plastics.

■ Our CFO(Chief Future Officer) Comment from Kyoko Ozawa
Among environmental issues, I am particularly concerned about the impact of CO2 on the earth. In fact, I feel that the weather is getting hotter and hotter year by year, and the number of Extreme weather is increasing. "I want to be a person who can show through actions, not just advocating for a better environment." While I was thinking that, I was appointed as CFO of Our.
As Our discussions with the summit members, he said, "If it is difficult to make environmental issues your own, companies should build a system that allows consumers to take environmentally friendly actions without being aware of it." We should do it,” and proposed to Euglena to build such a system. As a result, Euglena considers plastics, which are familiar and directly linked to environmental problems, to be the first step, and has led to the decision and consideration of measures to reduce petroleum-derived plastics, including the complete elimination of existing PET bottle products.
However, the world would not change even if only Euglena took action in consideration of the environment. I would like to realize a world where environmentally friendly behavior spreads to other companies and where environmentally friendly behavior becomes the norm.

■ Future policy
Based on the policies established by the CFO and Summit members, we aim to "create a state in which customers simply select our products and change their behavior to solve environmental problems without being aware of it." .. We believe that it is our responsibility as a company to avoid unintentionally imposing a burden on the environment of future generations through the use of our products by active generation customers. Going forward, we will continue to take measures that lead to environmentally friendly actions, not limited to efforts to reduce plastics in our products.
