Ingestion of paramylon, a functional ingredient peculiar to the microalgae Euglena
Confirmed that the secretion of adrenaline by exercise is suppressed
Euglena Co., Ltd.
Euglena Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Mitsuru Izumo) is Nagoya City University * 1 Paramylon, a functional ingredient peculiar to the microalgae Euglena (Japanese name: Euglena * 2 Adrenaline in the blood due to high-intensity exercise (high-intensity exercise) by continuously ingesting * 3 It was confirmed that the secretion of was suppressed.
* 1 Joint research with Professor Okutsu, Graduate School of Systems and Natural Sciences, Nagoya City University
* 2 Euglena and is characterized by a crystal structure in which glucose is linearly polymerized by β-1,3 bonds.
* 3 A type of hormone produced in the adrenal medulla that has the effect of activating sympathetic nerves.
■ Background and purpose
Human autonomic nerves include sympathetic nerves that are activated when tension, excitement, and stress are felt, and parasympathetic nerves that are activated when relaxed. Normally, the balance between sympathetic nerves and parasympathetic nerves is maintained. However, for example, when you exercise with high intensity, the secretion of adrenaline, which is a hormone, increases and the sympathetic nerves are activated, resulting in an instantaneous improvement in physical performance, but at the same time stress on the body. It can also cause.
This time, in order to confirm the effect of continuous intake of paramylon on the amount of adrenaline secreted, we conducted a study in which mice fed with paramylon performed high-intensity exercise.
■ Research content and results
Mice were given (1) normal diet and no exercise (rest group), (2) normal diet and high-intensity exercise * 4 (exercise group), and (3) paramilon-containing food. The group was divided into three groups with high exercise (exercise + paramilon group), and oral intake and intense exercise were performed for 2 weeks, and the adrenaline level in the blood was measured in each group.
As a result, it was confirmed that the blood adrenaline level was significantly suppressed in the (3) exercise + paramylon group compared to the (2) exercise group.

In other words, it was suggested that paramylon suppresses the secretion of adrenaline in the blood due to high-intensity exercise, and may alleviate the situation in which exercise causes sympathetic nerve dominance.
In the future, we will elucidate the mechanism by which paramylon intake suppresses the secretion of adrenaline by high-intensity exercise and its physiological significance, and aim to prove the usefulness of paramylon for stress.
In addition, we will carry out research and development with the aim of utilizing the microalgae Euglena and its ingredients in health foods, medical fields, etc. and increasing the added value as foodstuffs.
<About microalgae Euglena >
Microalgae Euglena (Japanese name: Euglena) is a type of alga that has the characteristics of both plants and animals and contains abundant types of nutrients such as vitamins and minerals in a well-balanced manner. In 2005, Euglena Co., Ltd. succeeded in mass edible outdoor culture for the first time in the world.
