By continuous intake of the microalgae Euglena
Suggests suppression of liver fibrosis by nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)
I confirmed the research results

Euglena Co., Ltd.

Euglena Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Mitsuru Izumo) suffers from liver cirrhosis and liver due to continuous ingestion of Euglena (Japanese name: Euglena We are pleased to inform you that we have confirmed the research results suggesting that non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) * 2, which may lead to the onset of liver cancer, suppresses liver fibrosis * 3.

NASH, which is called metabolic syndrome in the liver, is an inflammatory disease that arises from fatty liver, and as the symptoms progress, the liver becomes fibrotic, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Currently, there is no established treatment method for NASH, and improvement of lifestyle habits such as weight loss by diet and exercise therapy is the basis, and new means for suppressing the progression of pathological conditions are required.

In this experiment, model mice that developed NASH were Euglena powder or paramylon powder for 27 days, and the effect on liver fibrosis was measured. As a result, Euglena powder or paramylon powder significantly suppressed the fibrosis of the liver as compared with the mice fed with the normal food alone.
The results of these researches were Euglena Study Group held on November 5, 2016.
Going forward, we will continue to carry out research and development aimed at utilizing the Euglena

 The details are as follows.

About experiments on suppression of liver fibrosis

■ Research content
To compare the degree of liver fibrosis with NASH model mice (control group) in which NASH-developed model mice were Euglena The effect on liver fibrosis was measured. As a result, Euglena powder or paramylon powder had significantly suppressed liver fibrosis than mice fed with normal food alone.

NASH

■ Consideration
It was suggested that continuous ingestion of Euglena powder or paramylon powder may suppress liver fibrosis, which is one of the NASH symptoms, and contribute to suppressing the onset of liver cancer.

 * 1 Paramylon: Euglena, in which glucose molecules are linearly polymerized by β-1,3-bonds.
 * 2 Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH): Fatty liver disease with no clear history of drinking is called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NAFLD).
Of these, those that may progress to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
 * 3 Fibrosis: A phenomenon in which the part called connective tissue that constitutes tissues such as internal organs proliferates abnormally. In the liver, cirrhosis occurs as fibrosis progresses.
 * 4 Sirius red positive area: An index showing the degree of fibrosis.
