いすゞ自動車と
共同で実用化せよ。

2012年12月、微細藻類ユーグレナが本当に燃料になると思っていた人は、当時ほとんどいなかっただろう。
そんな中、この『DeuSEL^®（デューゼル）プロジェクト』が始まろうとしていた。

―ある日、とある大手大型自動車会社がユーグレナ社の取締役永田のもとに訪れた。
「ぜひ、私たちと一緒にユーグレナ由来のバイオディーゼル燃料を開発して、実用化しませんか！」

完成したユーグレナ由来バイオディーゼル燃料が、公道走行で使用するために必要な法律上の規格を満たさなかったのだ。2013年中に完成して2014年4月にはユーグレナ由来バイオディーゼル燃料でバスが走る予定だったが、もう間に合わない。

1月の正月休み明け早々、永田、若原、太田の3人は沈んだ気持ちでいすゞ自動車の藤沢工場に向かった。
会議室に辿り着くなり、3人は頭を下げて謝罪した。
「ごめんなさい！やっぱりユーグレナ由来バイオディーゼル燃料作れませんでした…」

若原たちは再度、いすゞ自動車藤沢工場に向かった。
チームで試行錯誤を重ねて、ついに法的規格を満たすユーグレナ由来バイオディーゼル燃料が完成したのだ。

そして、2014年6月25日。
ついにユーグレナ社といすゞ自動車は、ユーグレナ由来の次世代バイオディーゼル燃料の実用化に向けた共同研究契約の締結と、バイオディーゼル燃料の含有率が100％でも車両のエンジンに負担をかけることなく使用することができる次世代バイオディーゼル燃料の実用化を目指して2 社で共同研究に取り組む『DeuSEL^®プロジェクト』の開始を発表。
また、『DeuSEL^®プロジェクト』の活動の第一歩として、ユーグレナ社が開発した、世界初のユーグレナ由来バイオディーゼル燃料『DeuSEL^®』を使用したいすゞの藤沢工場シャトルバス『DeuSEL^®バス』の定期運行を同日から開始することを発表し、記者発表会でお披露目した。多数のメディアが参加した記者発表会は、当日夜のTV番組でも取り上げられるなど大反響となり、若原たちの努力が報われる形となった。
