In June 2013, as the director of the Production Technology Development Section (Director of the Production Technology Research Institute Institute) of the Research and Development Department at that time, joint research with various companies and production of algae at the Production Technology Research Institute of Ishigakijima (established in October 2012). Ryohei Nakano, who was engaged in technological development, received a resignation of personnel changes from our company Izumo. The transfer destination is Yaeyama Sangyo Co., Ltd., which is wholly owned by Euglena Co., Ltd. in Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Prefecture. A few months after making the company a wholly owned subsidiary in March 2013, it was a resignation aimed at strengthening cooperation with the company.
Nakano suddenly resigned

After graduating from the doctoral course, I was engaged in research on plant photosynthesis as a researcher at a university, but I joined the company because I wanted to utilize the knowledge and experience I had cultivated in research that is more directly linked to business.
入社後、研究分野の即戦力として、さまざまなパートナーとの共同研究に携わり、ユーグレナの効率的な培養方法の研究に従事。2010年ごろからは、日立プラントテクノロジー(現日立製作所)と新日本石油(現JXTGエネルギー)との共同研究に携わり、石垣島ユーグレナの屋外培養データなどを取得するために、微細藻類ユーグレナの生産拠点である石垣島の八重山殖産と、東京大学内のユーグレナの研究拠点である中央研究所を往復する日々を過ごした。
中野は、研究員としてユーグレナの培養に関する知見が豊富であることに加え、生産工場である八重山殖産の業務に関する知見や人脈などを有しており、ユーグレナグループが掲げる「研究所と生産工場の融合による藻類生産システムの技術革新」というミッションを達成するために最適な人材だった。

中野は、ユーグレナやクロレラの効率的な生産を実現するためには、研究室と生産工場との情報交換を密にし、研究室での実験結果を工場に、生産工場での課題を研究室に迅速かつ精緻にフィードバックすることが重要だと考えていた。
仲間の中には、これまでのやり方と異なる、中野のやり方に戸惑うメンバーもいたという。しかし次第に、中野が語る「研究所と生産工場のあり方」に共感していった。

ユーグレナを1人でも多くの方に届けたい
そして、中野が研究室と生産工場の連携の強化と並行して取り組んだのが、ユーグレナやクロレラの生産体制の整備と拡充だった。
ユーグレナ社が食品や化粧品で使用する石垣島ユーグレナの生産は、八重山殖産が担っており、高い生産効率で高品質なユーグレナを生産することはユーグレナグループにとって最重要課題だった。
中野は、この課題の解決に向けてユーグレナ増産プロジェクトを立ち上げる。
「当時、ユーグレナはテレビなどでの露出が増え、注目の素材になりはじめた。1人でも多くの方にユーグレナを届けたい。そんな思いでプロジェクトを推進した」

その結果、2017年1月、八重山殖産に生産設備増産工事が完了し、それまでの生産量の倍である年間160トンのユーグレナを生産することができる体制を確立した(リリース https://www.euglena.jp/news/n20170131/)。
また、翌年の2018年8月には、ユーグレナなどの先端的生産技術の研究開発を担う「先端生産開発棟」などの施設も完成した(リリース https://www.euglena.jp/news/20180911-2/)。中野は現在も、研究室と生産工場の連携の強化、生産効率のよく高品質なクロレラ、ユーグレナを生産する体制の整備に力を注いでいる。
Aiming for an accident-free production factory
Nakano is now focusing on safety and health management. We believe that all of our colleagues need to have a high awareness of health and safety, change their behavior, and change their habits.
Currently, Yaeyama Shokusan has a disaster-free record of over 600 days, which corresponds to the Type 1 disaster-free record set by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Nakano is focusing on extending this record to 1000 days and 2000 days.
We must change safety awareness, encourage safe behavior, establish safety habits, and ultimately make safety first a culture.
"Never cause occupational accidents. Build a corporate culture that puts safety first."
Nakano believes that health and safety management is the basis of all operations, and is working on this mission with his colleagues.
