The reality I witnessed overseas for the first time

In the summer of 1998, Mitsuru Izumo was in Bangladesh. I was excited about my first overseas internship and the upcoming internship at Grameen Bank.
18-year-old Izumo had a desire to help people in need of poverty and hunger. "Poor means you don't have enough food."
-Thinking this way, Izumo brought a lot of cookie bars in his bag for distribution in Bangladesh.

However, after spending a few days in Bangladesh, I realized that it was different from what I had imagined.
"Everyone is eating plenty of rice. There is curry. No one is hungry ..." When I observed it closely, I came across a fact.
"I'm eating rice and curry full, but I'm eating curry without ingredients day after day ..."
"Well, I'm eating a plain, nutritious diet and I'm malnourished."

Interaction with children in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has plenty of rice and wheat. The self-sufficiency rate of rice is also 100%. Hunger can be surpassed by rice in his own country. However, there was an overwhelming shortage of foods that are nutritional sources other than carbohydrates, such as meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, and fruits. The lack of these means that the child lacks the nutrients such as proteins, vitamins and minerals needed for growth.
Many people are at risk of life due to their low nutritional value, even if they have no trouble filling their stomachs.
What can I do?

Encounter of "fate"

食料や、栄養問題を解決するためには、それに関連する知識がまず必要だ。出雲は、元々東京大学の文系学部に在籍していたが、農学部へ転部することにした。
東京大学農学部五類　農業構造経営学専修。ここで出雲は“運命”と出会うことになる。

バングラデシュで炭水化物以外の食料が供給しづらい理由の一つに、新鮮なまま届ける仕組みが無いということがあげられる。肉や野菜は鮮度が命。新鮮なままたくさんの種類や量の肉や野菜を届けることが難しいのであれば、様々な栄養素が一つに詰まった“素材”を見つけて一度に届ける方法は無いものだろうか。
出雲は、そのような食べ物はないか、誰彼かまわず聞いて回った。しかし、なかなか出会うことができず、いつからか「もしかしたら一つの素材で様々な栄養を含むものは、自然界にはないかもしれない・・・」、そう思うようになっていた。

ある日、サークルの飲み会の後、同じ農学部の1学年後輩の鈴木とその話をする機会があった。
「様々な栄養素が一つに詰まった“素材”を探しているんだけど、ないんだよね」
「微細藻類ユーグレナなら、出雲さんの理想に近いかもしれません。動物と植物の間の生き物ですから」
これを聞いた出雲に、イナズマの衝撃が走った。

ユーグレナ、これだ。
そして、まだ誰も実現できていないユーグレナ屋外大量培養への挑戦が始まった。
